Play Ball!

The Lyon side of our family has always been huge baseball fans!
I can't tell you how many baseball and softball games Megan and I sat through growing up. Megan now gets to continue that tradition with watching her boys play but I'm sure that it is not quite as the adventure as when we were kids playing hide and seek at some Bakersfield baseball field. The reason for this whole "baseball" walk down memory lane is that my brother Tim just recently wrote a beautiful baseball tribute to my dad that I wanted to share. He captured our childhood growing up with a man who adored baseball and instilled with us a love for the Dodger Blue!

82 Personal Development • Volume 2, Number 2 • 2009

“If you build it, he will come.” Seven small, but very powerful words to sons around
the world who have played catch with their fathers while growing up. The movie Field of Dreams captured this moment perfectly. ESPN columnist Bill Simmons was quoted as saying, “I’ve always thought there were two types of people: those who love Field
of Dreams, and those who have no soul.”

Baseball, apple pie, and a father and son playing catch are about as American as it gets. I have no greater memory of my childhood than the times my dad and I played catch. We would throw for hours and hours. No words needed to be spoken.

It was Sunday, April 15, 1989, and I remember it like it was yesterday. Three generations of the Lyon family together at Dodger Stadium. My dad wanted to make sure
he was there when my own son attended his first Dodgers game. Trevor was only eighteen months old and had no idea what was going on, but it was a great day for the three of us; my dad, my son, and me at Dodger Stadium, eating Dodger Dogs, and listening to Vin Scully on the radio as we watched the game. That was a day I will always remember.

Vin Scully, the Hall of Fame broadcaster and “voice” of the Los Angeles Dodgers, was
something my dad and I always shared. My dad taught me to appreciate Vinny, as we called him. More storyteller than broadcaster, his voice is like no other.

I got to spend a few days with my dad the summer he passed. He was bedridden in his
living room and couldn’t open his eyes those last few days, but each of those nights we were together we would listen to Vinny call the Dodger games. We sat together for three hours, a peaceful feeling in the room each night as Vinny told his stories. I remember one moment that summer when my dad asked me if I wanted to play catch. I just said, “Sure,” but knew, of course, it was just a dream—Parkinson’s was winning the battle. Five minutes later he wanted to know why we weren’t out playing catch. He asked me if I was afraid, if I thought I couldn’t handle his best stuff. As a tear rolled down my cheek, I told him that was exactly right. About an hour later he spoke again. He knew he was dying. “I am never going to play catch or swing a bat
again, am I?” he asked. I told him, “No Dad, probably not.” Three days later my dad left us.

I remembered the night I won my first fast pitch softball world championship and I
called my dad. He was so proud. Musician Marc Cohn wrote: “How many roads
you’ve traveled, how many dreams you’ve chased, across sand and sky and gravel, looking for one safe place, will you make a smoother landing, when you break your
fall from grace, into the arms of understanding, looking for one safe place.”

I will always remember the days we played catch for hours and hours; that was my one safe place. Playing catch is something dads and sons have always done, and I hope always will.

Thanks Dad.

Happy First Day of Spring!

I LOVE SPRING!
Ever since I was a little girl, I have always loved the first day of SPRING! Even as a teacher, each year my students and I would celebrate the first year of spring. So...just a reminder to everyone...enjoy this day!

But I thought that I was your GIRLFRIEND!

Hudson has always been my lovey boy. He always wants to hug mommy and is quick to give me a hug. So imagine my surprise last week when he started talking about his new friend CJ. I assumed CJ was a new friend from preschool. Trying to figure out who this CJ was, I asked what HE looked like. Hudson replied that SHE has lots of "dots" on her face and super, super blonde hair. Oh, so CJ is a GIRL?! All weekend he has been talking about CJ. Well this morning I went upstairs and found that Hudson had created (all on his own) the initials C J made out of train tracks. I am conflicted about whether I should be proud that he knows the letters of the alphabet so well or saddened that he no longer considers mommy his girlfriend.

Monet or Elmer's Glue?

OR...
Are You Kidding ME?...Delaney and I were at her horseback riding lessons, softly brushing Monet. I know better than to ever stand behind a horse, but unfortunately learned (the hard way)that you have to be careful standing to the side of the horse as well. We were brushing Monet, and apparently she didn't like my brushing techniques when all of a sudden she KICKED me SIDEWAYS! Square on my thigh! Oh My, that is a pain that I hope to never repeat. I have a full horse hoof print on my thigh. I was going to have Matt take a picture of it to post but then thought that you might not appreciate having a picture of my mangled thigh to look at. Needless to say, I will be much more alert around Monet from here on out!

(delaney wanted me to add the disclaimer that of course I am joking about even implying that I would turn Monet into glue!)

Delaney and Monet

Delaney has started taking horseback riding lessons. She has been having a great time and looks so darn cute riding her horse Monet. Delaney loves having her friends Hannah and Sophia taking the lessons too. (Although I think Meagan, Erin and I got a little more than we bargained for!)

Hudson the Engineer

Hudson can spend all day taking any regular household item and creating the most wonderful creations! This is his latest "tower" built out of apple juice boxes and chocolate milk. He was very proud!

Happy Birthday Dad!

My dad's birthday was January 8th. He would laugh, although love, that he was a topic on my blog. For those who did not have the true pleasure of meeting my dad, I wanted to share some of my favorite things about him. My dad had the driest, most sarcastic sense of humor (it apparently was a genetic trait that he passed on to us kids!) He always made up the funniest sayings, little tunes and songs. I often find myself doing the same thing with delaney and hudson. We have silly songs and sayings that we say that we are not quite sure what they even mean, they just somehow seem to fit so naturally with our family. My dad was a generous man, the kind of man that taught us kids to give money to those who needed it, always stressing that there was someone who would always need it more than us. He gave to people he knew and those who would never even know his name. I hope that I can help to instill that kind of generous spirit in delaney and hudson. Life with my dad wasn't always easy. But for those of you who wonder and question whether someone can change, I can assure you that they can! My dad's illness changed him. The last few years of his life were filled with much sorrow as we watched him deteriorate but they were also filled with love and laughter and the assurance that he loved us unconditionally! My dad also loved being a grandfather. He radiated love whenever he was around them. The walls of his house were covered with drawings that all of the grand kids had made for him. He displayed them with pride and as if each one belonged in a museum.

As another birthday passes and thoughts of him fill my heart and mind, I smile.

Happy Birthday Dad!

Jesus, thanks for being such a GOOD SPORT!

You never realize just how much the things that you say and do influence your children (good and bad), until you hear yourself coming out of their mouth. The other night we were saying our family prayers and Delaney was doing a beautiful job. We have been working on making sure to say all of the things that we are grateful for when Delaney added,
“And thanks Jesus for always being such a

GOOD SPORT
and having such a good attitude for all of those things that you do for us!”
Matt and I started cracking up. I don’t think that I have ever heard anyone thank Jesus for being such a GOOD SPORT!

Christmas Stories

I realize that Melissa and I share most of the same friends but for those of you that didn't see this link for personalized Christmas stories on her website, I didn't want you to miss out on it. It is most definitely worth checking out. You can go to the website and personalize stories using your child's name. It is easy to use - pick the story you want, add the names and then print it out.
The kids have loved hearing their names throughout the stories each night.

You aren't going to wear THAT, are you?

The other day, I was getting Delaney ready for school. We were ready to walk out the door and she stopped me and to my total shock and horror said, "Mom, you aren't going to wear THAT, are you? Seriously you are planning on changing into something else?!" I want to reassure everyone, I was not wearing a gold lame jumpsuit. I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt to workout in. Apparently I was not "FANCY" enough for Delaney. I can't believe that she is already concerned about MY appearance. I can't wait for those teenage years!

Halloween 2008

Delaney and Avery on Halloween night.

Delaney and Hannah at the Pumpkin Patch. It was over a 100 degrees the day we went to pick out our pumpkin.
My little ballerina and penguin!

We went to a great Halloween party. The "balloon man" was having a great time making Hudson's SPIDER hat!

Hudson's First Day of Preschool

Hudson's First Day of Preschool
Hudson started preschool this year. I was very apprehensive about him going, more because I wasn't sure what to do without having my BABIES around! He loves school and being a "Big Boy".

Hudson and Hyke playing on the first day of preschool.

Delaney's First Day of School

Delaney's First Day of Kindergarten - Mr. Evan's class - Room 3
I can't believe that my little girl is already in kindergarten. Delaney was more than ready to start but I am not so sure that Matt and I were as ready for her to be such a "big girl".
She is in a K/1 combination class and is already asking if she can just go ahead and do the FIRST grade work.

Delaney looks so little at her desk. She is sitting next to her friend Rachel.

Delaney and Hannah on the first day.
Our last minute decision to switch Delaney to Los Ranchos proved to be a popular choice with Delaney and Hannah. Even though they aren't in the same class, they get to see each other every day.

Summer of 2008

Children's Museum with Avery
We spent the day (or at least a few hours) at the Children's Museum with Avery and Finley.
The kids all had a great time playing together.

We start them young in the JONES house!
I have been accused of loving to exercise a little too much. I swear though, we do not force our kids to get on the elliptical and workout.
Hudson said that he was doing it so that he could be healthy and strong.

Grammie and Grandpa's new trampoline.
All of "the cousins" were here this summer visiting.
Most of that time was spent playing and jumping on the trampoline.

Dinner in San Luis with Holly!
We miss our Holly!
We were all excited to go out to dinner with Holly.
We miss having her with us all of the time but are lucky enough
to have her younger sister Heidi helping with the kids now.
(And to my credit, I have only called Heidi "Holly" once.)

Dinner at Roy's in Las Vegas.
We had such a great time on our trip. We played, ate at "fancy" restaurants, went to the pool, shopped (that was mostly all me!) and watched the water show, over and over, at the Bellagio.

Hudson is his element in Las Vegas.
In our hotel room was a huge window that overlooked the main tram station. Hudson, who LOVES his trains, set up his train set on the ledge of the window watching the "trains" for HOURS. We had a hard time getting him to do much of anything else!

Delaney and Hudson get their tonsils taken out

In June, Delaney and Hudson both got their tonsils taken out.
We did them on the same day, back to back surgeries.
I know, you are thinking ON THE SAME DAY?! But honestly it wasn't as bad as we thought it would be. They both did great! Hudson was scared, especially as the anesthesiologist took him into the operating room. (They wouldn't let me go with him.)
Delaney on the other hand, held hands with the anesthesiologist as
she skipped to the operating room with him.
He later told us that she talked and told stories up until the second that she went under.

Delaney the Cowgirl

Let me preface this post by saying that it was a VERY hot day when this picture was taken. I am trying to justify why Delaney only had on her new pink Cowgirl hat. So keeping that in mind, Delaney comes up to me and says,
"Mom, it is my DUTY to keep my BOOTY on the horse."
Where does she come up with this stuff? I can guarantee you that the word "booty" is not regularly used in our house!

Enjoying ice cream - Hudson, Charlie, Delaney,
Harry and Avery
(John and Finley not shown in the picture.)

Hudson, Did you actually get ANY of
that ice cream in your mouth?

Eating ice cream at Avila Valley Barn

We always have so much fun at "The Barn." Delaney, who is already working on her manipulation (I mean persuasion skills) let us all know that it really was way too hot outside so we should all go in to the toy area because it would be MUCH, MUCH cooler there! She is only 4!

Don't you know your DINOSAURS?

I had to take Delaney and Hudson to the doctor. (they both have to get their tonsils out!) So the doctor trying to make the whole experience less scary asks Hudson if he can look in his ears, nose, mouth, etc. to see if he can find a dinosaur. Hudson readily agreed because he knows his dinosaurs. After a few, "Is the dinosaur in there?" Hudson apparently thought it was time to school the doctor in the field of dinosaurs. When the doctor asked (for the last time!) if there was a dinosaur in Hudson's mouth - Hudson responded
"Don't you know, it is not just a dinosaur, it is a TRICERATOPS?
